28,000 animals drown on export ship

Posted by Jo Louise | December 21st, 2009

l1Australia’s live exporters say tighter global regulations should be considered, after one of the industry’s worst accidents.

More than 40 sailors are feared dead and almost 30,000 head of livestock were killed when a live export ship sunk off the coast of Lebanon on the weekend.

The ship was transporting stock from Uruguay and LiveCorp says it has not operated out of Australia for several years.

The RSPCA’s Melina Tensen says the sinking is further proof of the dangers of the trade.

“The terrible drowning of the 28,000 cattle and sheep on the Danny FII highlights the inherent dangers in transporting live animals over such long distances; but the majority of deaths at sea are actually related to the stress of being transported.”

“No amount of regulation will ever make the live animal trade safe or humane.”
